Pench

Pench National Park is situated in the Seoni District of Southern Madhya Pradesh and runs in continuation with Pench National Park in Maharashtra. It is spread over almost 758 sq. km. Pench was included as the 19th Project Tiger Reserve as late as 1992.

Going there

Pench is accessible by rail and air.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Nagpur. Nagpur is well connected from all major cities.
Distance between Nagpur to Pench (Turia gate) is 90 Km and takes around 1.5 hours. Private taxis are available on hire from Nagpur.

By Air

The nearest airport is Nagpur. Private taxis are available on hire from Nagpur.

Places to stay

There are not too many accommodation options in Turia. There are about 15 hotels, which call them as resorts, and none of them can be categorized as budget options. MP Tourism operates a property at Turia and it can be booked from their regional offices or online from their website.

Forest Department accommodation is available at Karmajhiri. Details about FRH can be obtained here.

We stayed at Bagheera Retreat (+91 9165187486) at turia, a decent place to stay with large and clean rooms.

Timing

There are two safaris daily. Safari timings depend on the season.

Cost

Each Safari costs Rs. 2430 – Rs 1230 for permit, Rs 200 for guide, Rs 1200 for jeep. Six persons in a jeep – so wherever possible, people share.

The Tiger Show

Every morning, elephants are used to track the location of the tigers. This depends on the skill of the mahauts in locating the tigers by their pugmarks. Once located, all the elephants gather and the central office is informed. Tourists can then ride the elephant to view the tiger.
Charge: Rs 200 per person for each viewing.

Season

The park is closed from July to September– because of rains and also the breeding season of the animals. Any other time is fine, but the hotter it is, the better is the possibility of viewing wild life. It is normally very cold in the early mornings – so even in summer a light jacket is required at the beginning of the morning safari.

It seems you had ‘all inclusive’ trip to Pench; The collarwali, cubs, jackals, birds et al. Loved the narration. Looking forward to more on some of wildlife sanctuaries. Congo!

    Nadeem,
That’s a good terminology – ‘all inclusive’ :-) . Yes, it was a good trip, by god’s grace. I love the forests (including my 10 year daughter), so its always a pleasure trip for all of us.
Lets hope that these forests and wild life survive.

Tadoba does not have any elephant safaris. Pench had ‘Tiger Shows’ – which is not an elephant safari. If the forest officials could locate any tiger, they would take tourists on elephants to view the tiger. Viewing time could be as less as a minute, depending on the total number of tourists. But very recently I have heard that this has been discontinued, though it is not confirmed.
Viewing tigers is never guaranteed, but Tadoba has had good tiger sightings in December.

Tadoba to Pench would be around 4-5 hours by road, if you travel by car. Public transport will take longer as you have to break at multiple points.
How you split depends on your preference. If you have 4 nights, you can split 2 nights between Tadoba & Pench. You will have time for 3 safaris at each park.
    Enjoy your trip!!
